Vrischik (Scorpio)- The Most Powerful Sign of the Zodiac

Vedic Astrology is comprised of 12 signs. This article will focus on the 8th sign:
Vrischik.

The Lord Mangal (Mars) is the ruler of both Mesh (Aries) and Vrischik (Scorpio) and is very powerful. His valor and courage are boundless and individuals with an emphasis of Vrischik in their charts display these qualities to their fullest extent. Mangal is bold, fiery, fierce, invincible and likes to thoroughly dominate all situations. He is ever ready for war and does not back down. In Mesh, the 1st sign of the zodiac he displays these qualities out in the open but Vrischik is much more complex.

Vrischik is secretive, vindictive, bold, patient, fearless, forceful, and willful. Where Mesh rashi attacks its opponent with full force in bright afternoon, Vrischik retreats and lies in wait until dark. Then when the enemy is drunk and fast asleep Vrischik quietly destroys them with swift force and deadly accuracy. It is said that the power of Vrischik doubles at night. When others are asleep that is when Vrischik comes alive.

There are many reasons why Vrischik is very difficult beat and nearly impossible to kill.
  • Firstly, Vrischik is always well informed about the opponents' weaknesses. This sign will never battle the opponent on their own ground. Rather, they will pick terrain which is most uncomfortable and unfamiliar to the enemy.

  • Secondly, Vrischik always works on the emotional plane. Make no mistake about it, of all the signs this sign is the most emotional. If an idea appeals to a Vrischik, no matter how impractical it is he/she will rationally carry it out with deadly precision. This emotional approach works wonderfully on enemies. Even before the enemy is all set to attack Vrischik will destroy their confidence by emotionally convincing them that they will lose. With this attitude they come into the battlefield and quickly diminish.

  • Third main quality of a Vrischik is their attitude. It takes them quite a while to make important decisions but once those decisions are made they stick to them. The mind of a Vrischik is very inquisitive, thorough and sharp. Whenever something interests them, they will find out everything about that subject and eventually become an authority on it. No matter what others feel about them or no matter what their circumstances show, if a Vrischik has decided to carry something through to conclusion he/she will.

This sign offers extremes in everything. People in this sign can be the greatest saints or the worst sinners. There is no middle ground. One negative quality associated with Vrischik is: Tremendous bottled up anger. The reason for this is that if a person offends a Vrischik, Vrischik will not forget but rather wait patiently and seething with resentment. When wating the anger will build and pollute the psyche until it becomes impossible to bear and then Vrischik will explode. This results in total destruction.

The positive quailitues are tremendous resourcefulness, concentration and an innate ability to advance rapidly in meditation. When negative qualities of vindictiveness and anger are transformed to peacefulness and generosity then this sign becomes the most profound in the zodiac.

Innately, Vrischik is tuned in to the psychic realm. Intuition is highly developed and as a result people with an emphasis on Vrischik are capable of becoming great psychics, detectives, astrologers and priests.

Mahadashas in Vedic Astrology

To make accurate predictions in Vedic Astrology, mahadasha cycles provide an invaluable tool.

What are mahadashas?
Mahadasha means major period of a planet. The period of time in which each planet exercises his influence on the person.

Are all mahadashas equal in length?

NO. Each mahadasha is of different length.

Ketu- 7 years
Shukra (Venus)- 20 years
Surya (Sun)- 6 years
Chandra (Moon)- 10 years
Mangal (Mars)- 7 years
Rahu- 18 years
Guru (Jupiter)- 16 years
Shani (Saturn)- 19 years
Budha (Mercury)- 17 years

Why do all the mahadashas total 120 years?

Ancient sages in India when they constructed the Mahadasha Tables intuitively knew that a human being should live to 120 years provided he/she lives their life in a simple and well regulated manner. In the world we live in today this is not possible due to illness, disease, stress, pollution, alcohol, smoking and meat consumption. All of these stress the body and as a result man/woman cannot live to 120. Hence a person will not be able to live through all the planetary periods.

How are mahadashas calculated?

Mahadashas are calculated based on the Chandra (Moon) position in the horoscope at birth. There are 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions) in which Chandra can reside and each of those lunar mansions is owned by a planet who is considered lord of that nakshatra. In whoseever nakshatra Chandra is in at birth, that lords Mahadasha will be operating at birth.

These are the 27 Nakshatras and their lord

1. Ashwini- Ketu
2. Bharini- Shukra
3. Krittika- Surya
4. Rohini- Chandra
5. Mrigasira- Mangal
6. Ardra- Rahu
7. Punarvasu- Guru
8. Pushya- Shani
9. Ashlesha- Budha
10. Magha- Ketu
11. Poorva Phalguni- Shukra
12. Uttar Phalguni- Surya
13. Hasta- Chandra
14. Chitra- Mangal
15. Swati- Rahu
16. Vishakha- Guru
17. Anuradha- Shani
18- Jyestha- Budha
19- Moola- Ketu
20. Poorva Ashad- Shukra
21. Uttar Ashad- Surya
22. Shravan- Chandra
23. Dhanishtha- Mangal
24. Satabhistha- Rahu
25. Poorva Bhadrapada- Guru
26. Uttar Bhadrapad- Shani
27. Revati- Budha

Example: If a person is born with his Chandra placed in Karka (Cancer) rashi in Pushya Nakshatra then his 1st mahadasha cycle would be Shani. Budha mahadasha would follow then Ketu then Surya... and the last one would be Guru Mahadasha.

Similarly if a person is born with his Chandra placed in Mesh (Aries) rashi in Ashwini Nakshatra then his 1st mahadasha cycle would be Ketu. Shukra mahadasha would follow then Surya then Chandra... and the last one would be Budha Mahadasha.

What are the finer points in calculating Mahadashas?

There are 12 signs in astrology. Each sign contains 30 degrees. Each degree contains 60 minutes. Each nakshatra occupies 13 degrees and 20 minutes of each sign. Thus all 27 nakshatras cover all 360 degrees of the zodiac.

To demonstrate how mahadashas are calculated I will give you an example. This will simplify everything. Let's say 2 people (Person A and Person B) both have their Chandra placed in Bharini Nakshatra in Mesh rashi. Person A has his chandra placed at 14 degrees and Person B has his Chandra placed at 20 degrees at birth. Both people will start with the operating period of Shukra because Bharini Nakshatra is ruled by Shukra. However, only Person A will go through the entire 20 year mahadasha of Shukra whereas Person B will endure approximately 10 years of the Shukra Mahadasha.

At least now you know the basics. Mahadasha calculation comes with practice so give it time.

Bobby Fischer- The Emperor of Chess

Bobby Fischer was born on March 9th 1943 at 2:39 P.M. in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. and died on January 18th 2008. He was a very controversial figure because of his anti-semetic views and strange lifestyle. However, in this artile I am only going to focus on his chess ability and his style from an astrological point of view.
What were the factors in his kundali that made him unbeatable? Why was his chess so simple and easy to understand? Why did he choose chess as his battle ground? I have studied his chart and I would like to share it with you.
You can pull up his Vedic chart by the above information I have given you.
First of all he was born in Karka lagna with Chandra placed in Mesh rashi in Ashwini Nakshatra in the 10th house. The 10th house in any Kundali rules public image and professional limelight. Since Mesh rashi is a very fiery and combative sign Fischer's emotional nature was always ready for battle. He was ever ready for War. Chandra being placed in Ashwini Nakshatra made him very outspoken and honest. He was always very straightforward and upfront. Ashwini Nakshatra in astrology is classified as a Dev Nakshatra and hence his emotional nature was pure.
Secondly, the dispositor of chandra (ruler of the rashi in which Chandra is placed) is very strong. Mangal is the graha that gives combative ability and he is very strongly placed in Makar rashi. This single placement is the Key to his entire chart. Mangal in Makar rashi gives the ability to plan, organize and execute attacks to perfection. Just look at some of his chess games and you will notice how easily he destroys his opponents. No fancy schemes or cheap tactics, just perfect planning and execution. Mangal is a very auspicious graha for Karka Lagna and thus whereever he is located and also whereever his dristi (aspect) is all of those areas prosper. Mangal has dristi on the 7th house (relationships- in his case with his and his opponents' chess pieces), 10th house (his own public image and career), 1st house (forceful and dynamic personality), and 2nd house (the highest earning chess player during his time).
I have singled out just these 2 areas in his kundali which contributed to his greatness. Due to heredity he had a I.Q. which was over 180 and this also contributed to his chess success.

The misconception of Manglik Dosh

Many people are terribly afraid of Manglik Dosh because of all the mis-conceptions about this concept. I am not going to go in too much detail because it can get confusing. I am just going to give you the facts. If you have any questions you can hit the call button at the top of the page or you can send me an email at l.gadgil@thevedicastrologer.com

First of all- Who is Mangal (Mars) dev, what does he stand for?
Mangal is one of the 9 main Gods of Vedic Astrology. He rules over drive, focus, assertiveness, aggression, ego, and will.
Secondly- What is Manglik Dosh?
Location of Mangal in certain places in the Kundali (astrology chart) where he causes marital discord.
Thirdly- What places in the Kundali?
A Kundali is divided in 12 parts broadly encompassing all the sectors of life. They are called 12 houses.
1st House- Personality
2nd House- Family and wealth
3rd house- Siblings and Courage
4th house- Home life and mother
5th house- children and speculation
6th house- diseases and debts
7th house- spouse and marriage
8th house- death and inheritance
9th house- good luck, travel, and father
10th house- profession and public image
11th house- income and acquainces
12th house- expenditure and losses

Mangal in houses 1,2,4,7,8, and 12 causes manglik dosh and hence a person is termed Manglik.

The lagna (rising sign) of the person determines whether a person is manglik. This is calculated through the use of birth time, birth date, and birth location.

Now here is the secret: Manglik dosh is valid only for Vrishab (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), and Vrischik (Scorpio) lagna rashis.

Let's see why?...

Lagna Rashi (Rising sign of the person at birth)

Mesh (Aries)- Mangal is the ruler of Mesh rashi and hence Mangal would own the 1st house in the Kundali. The 1st house is a beneficial house and hence regardless of where Mangal is located he will only give beneficial results.

Vrishab (Taurus)- Mangal becomes ruler of the 12th house of losses and expenditure because Mesh occupies the 12th house position in the kundali. Hence when Mangal is located in Vrishab (1st house), Mithun (2nd house), Simha (4th house), Vrischik (7th house), Dhanu (8th house), and Mesh (12th house) he will cause heavy losses and expenditure. In these locations person is considered Manglik.

Mithun (Gemini)- Mangal becomes ruler of the 11th house of income and acquaintances because Mesh occupies the 11th house position in the kundali. Whereever Mangal is located in the kundali he will give good results.

Karka (Cancer)- Mangal becomes ruler of the 10th house of profession and public image because Mesh occupies the 10th house position. Person is not manglik even if Mangal is placed in houses 1,2,4,7,8,12.

Simha (Leo)- Mangal lords over the 9th house of good luck and travel because Mesh is placed in the 9th house. No person born in Simha lagna can be considered Manglik regardless of where Mangal is located.

Kanya (Virgo)- Mangal lords over the 8th house of death because Mesh is placed in the 8th house. When mangal is placed in Kanya (1st house), Tula (2nd house), Dhanu (4th house), Meen (7th house), Mesh (8th house), and Simha (12th house) person is considered Manglik. Since he lords over death for Kanya lagna he will bring death like conditions to the house he is placed in. The situation is particularly grave for those who are Manglik.

Tula (Libra)- Mangal becomes lord of the auspicious 7th house of spouse and marriage. Mesh rashi placed in the seventh location from Tula Lagna causes no mangal dosh.

Vrischik (Scorpio)- Mangal lords over the 6th house of debts and diseases. Hence Mangal when placed in Vrischik (1st house), Dhanu (2nd house), Kumbha (4th house), Vrishab (7th house), Mithun (8th house), and Tula (12th house) causes the individual to become manglik.

Dhanu (Sagittarius)- Mangal lords over the 5th house of children and speculation which is an auspicious house. Since Mesh is placed in the 5th house no Manglik dosh is present for Dhanu Lagna rashi.

Makar (Capricorn)- Mangal is the swami of the 4th house of mother and home which is a very auspicious house and hence no Mangal dosh is caused.

Kumbha (Aquarius)- Mesh is placed on the 3rd house of siblings and courage. This area is ruled by Mangal for Kumbha lagna rashi. No mangal dosh is evident.

Meen (Pisces)- Mangal rules over the auspicious house of wealth and even when placed in houses 1,2,4,7,8, and 12 Mangal will not cause manglik dosh.

Mangal has dristi (aspect) on the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 8th place from himself and hence he impacts those houses as well.

To clarify- Let's say a person has Vrischik Lagna with Mangal being placed in Vrischik. Since he lords over the 6th house of debts and diseases not only would he spoil the personality (1st house) he would also spoil the mother (4th house), the spouse (7th house) and also increase the possibility of causing death by disease (Mangal is 6th lord and has dristi on the 8th house which stands for death).

Let's take another example. Let's say a person has Karka lagna with Mangal placed in Makar in the 7th house. Since Mangal lords over the 10th house of profession and public image for Karka Lagna he would enhance all the criteria of the house he is placed in as well as the criteria of the houses he aspects. This means he would enhance the career of the spouse (7th house placement), the persons own career (10th house which is 4th from the 7th house), the personality of the person (1st house which is the 7th house aspect of mangal in the 7th house) and the persons wealth (2nd house which is 8th from the 7th house). In short Mangals rulership of profession (10th house) for Karka lagna ensures that Mangal is a huge beneficial influence for Karka lagna natives.

There is 1 more point that I want to mention.

It is true that Mangal also rules Vrischik rashi but the primary nature of Mangal is more compatible with Mesh rashi. His nature whether benefic or malific is determined by the house in which Mesh rashi is placed not Vrischik. This is the reason why for Vrischik lagna rashi, Mangal even though he rules this sign is still a malific. Even if Vrischik rules the house of personality this does not nullify the effect of Mesh ruling the 6th house of debts and diseases.

Indian Astrological Gemstones

Graha (Planet)-Corrosponding Gemstone- Indian Name-Color

Surya (Sun)- Ruby- Manik- Dark Red
Chandra (Moon)- Pearl- Moti- Silver
Mangal (Mars)- Red Coral- Powla- Red
Budha (Mercury)- Emerald- Panna- Green
Guru (Jupiter)- Yellow Sapphire- Pushkaraj- Yellow
Shukra (Venus)- Diamond- Heera- Colorless
Shani (Saturn)- Blue Sapphire- Neelam- Blue
Rahu- Hessionite- Gomed- Yellow
Ketu- Cat's Eye- Lahusinya- Grey

There are substitute gemstones such as Yellow Topaz instead of Yellow Sapphire but only these core 9 gemstones give strong results. Substitutes will only deliver 40% results. Please donot choose to wear any of these gemstones based on your birth month or your sun sign. A Vedic astrological patrika (chart) needs to be constructed by an expert Vedic astrologer to determine which gemstones will yield favorable results and which ones will cause tremendous harm. There is some more basic information that I want to share with you so that you are not fooled. These gemstones must be set in different metals and worn on different fingers.

Gemstone- Finger- Metal in which the stone is set
Ruby- Ring- Gold or Copper
Pearl- Little finger- Silver
Red Coral- Ring- Gold or Copper
Emerald- Little finger- Gold
Yellow Sapphire- Index finger- Gold
Diamond- Middle finger- Gold or Silver
Blue Sapphire- Middle finger- Iron
Hessionite- Middle finger- Aluminium
Cat's Eye- Middle finger- Alloy

Lots of astrologers prescribe Gold or Silver as the default metal for these Gemstones to be set in. This is wrong. Only Yellow Sapphire and Emerald should always be set in Gold. The stones have inherent energies within them that activate different centers in the mind. Each stone has a particular metal which accurately binds with the stones' energy. For Ruby, Red Coral, and Diamond the Vedic astrology chart needs to be constructed to determine which metal to use.
Now I want to tell you what gifts each stone offers:

Ruby- Increases self-confidence, ego and leadership ability. Ruby increases heat in the body.
Pearl- Pacifies the emotions. Person remains calm even in chaos.
Red Coral- Gives drive to accomplish goals against all odds. Also increases heat in the body.
Emerald- Refines the intellect. Reduces stoubborness, anxiety, and depression.
Yellow Sapphire- Gives wisdom and helps in meditation. Soothes the soul.
Diamond- Gives sex appeal and increases the ability to attract material wealth.
Blue Sapphire- Gives detachment and cools the body. Helps you connect with your inner self.
Hessionite- Speeds up the intellect. Gives ability to absorb vast amounts of information in a short time.
Cat's Eye- Tremendously aids in attaining moksha (liberation). This stone drastically increases body temperature.

The size of the gemstone can only be determined by an expert astrologer. Readers should know that larger sized gemstones are not better than smaller gemstones.

Diamond dealers always use 4 C's to determine the price of the stone. Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat. Buyers should know the most important is Clarity. For any stone, Don't compromise on the Clarity.

That should give you a basic idea. For concerns just hit the call button to speak with me.
